An electric motor is an electrical machine that converts electric energy into mechanical energy, further to motional energy.

The earliest prototype of electric motor appeared in the 1740's, invented by a Scottish monk and scientist, Andrew Gordon. Basically, a motor consists of a stator with or without windings, a rotor with or without windings, a shaft, two bearings and two covers or brackets. To protect the stator and wire windings, also for good looking purpose, most of motors have a housing or an enclosure outside.

For our 1HP swamp cooler motor, the stator is a stack of laminations made of silicon steel sheet and punched by hi-speed puncher, as well as the rotor. The stator is further inserted with wire windings which are made with either copper wire or aluminum wire. The rotor laminations are stuffed with cast aluminum. Except small size motors, most of swamp cooler motors have small wings at both end rings of the rotor for heat dissipation and balancing.

An electric motor works through the interaction between the magnetic field in the stator and the electric current in the rotor.

The stator is the component that generates the motor's magnetic field. Usually, the field is classified as two types: static (DC) and dynamic (AC). Our 1HP swamp cooler motors are all in dynamic type. The rotor is inducted to generate electric current with the dynamic magnetic field, and forced to rotate by the torque caused between the stator and rotor.

An electric motor can be powered by direct current or alternating current, according to which we classify motors as DC and AC types. Our 1HP swamp cooler motors are AC motors.
